Hi Meanwhile the dhcp-client package is gone from debian. dhcp3-client is the default as far as I know and dhclient3 is called without the option '-e' from /sbin/ifup.
Also my provider has changed the cable modem behaviour. Even when my connection is down the modem provides a local dhcp server so that I always have an accessible dhcp server. I'm probably only affected by this problem anymore in case of a hardware defect of my cable modem. So far, so good. /sbin/dhclient is now part of the dhcp3-client package and a link to /sbin/dhclient3. As /sbin/ifup still calls dhclient with the option '-e' and this option has a different meaning for dhclient3 you may want to remove this option from the call of dhclient in /sbin/ifup to avoid future clashes. I don't know if you want to keep this bug open because of the discussion about the dhclient wrapper or as a reminder for the above mentioned change to ifup.
