This isn't the crux of the problem; rather as you can see here: https://buildd.debian.org/fetch.cgi?&pkg=mg&ver=20090107-1&arch=amd64&stamp=1234883856&file=log the problem is that stuff is being placed in usr/local at all, by dh_auto_install. I'm looking into this now.
