I've recently reinstalled my system, so there is not much accumulated crap yet.
I haven't yet reinstalled the VL Gothic font, but something is still strange
with the fonts. Below is a list of my installed font packages, and 4 in
~/.fonts: Arial Unicode, Bitstream Cyberbit, MS Gothic and MS Mincho. I still
get an ugly font in the headers on anandtech, though it's a different one this
time (could be Cyberbit). The same font is also used for the complete text at
http://de.reuters.com/article/topNews/idDEBEE51D03H20090214, which is quite
unfortunate, since it replaces the German umlauts with Japanese Kana. The one
thing that's still the same is my Firefox configuration, since I wanted to keep
all the addons, cookies, history etc. But the font configuration uses only
serif, sans-serif and monospace, and the "allow pages to use their own fonts"
option is off.
As for The Wanderer's problem (I don't see anything wrong with graphics, only
the font choices are wrong sometimes), that sounds to me like a hardware/driver
problem. Especially if it's not visible on screenshots, then I'd guess a
failing graphics card (or perhaps monitor, but I'd guess that would affect
everything more or less equally).
