Yes. You have two options: a) Remove [cm-default] from your test file and add lm-math.map to the distribution (see http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/ps-type1/lm/fonts/map/dvipdfm/lm/). b) Ask Don Knuth to add umlauts to cmr.
