Yeah looks like that works. Taking
pdebuild --debbuildopts -a\ -b
instead of the documented ("space-delimited")
pdebuild --debbuildopts -a -b
The --debbuildopts entry in the pdebuild man page needs to be changed if
this is to be considered the correct solution.
