Since network-manager 0.6.6-3, both knetworkmanager and nm-applet tray icons start to show the wireless signal meter as soon as a wireless network has been detected; the icon doesn't change during the connection steps (no animation in shown) and after the connection has been established. Downgrading network-manager to 0.6.6-2 solves this issue.
