this would be a wishlist bug to "support for evolution data server
backend" ... upstream is aware of that, but doesnt seem to have to
resources to do that (most likely because its not really
cross-platform)

Those are glitches and a bunch of improvements exist. Can you try
latest iceowl 0.9 from experimental and see if there are
improvements that help you to use calendaring more efficiently?
