I'm afraid I can't provide the directory because it's too big; it's the
build of upstream's kernel 2.6.12 with Con Kolivas patch release #0
applied. The command line is "dpkg-deb --build debian/tmp-image .." and
is executed from /usr/src/linux.

On the other hand, I must apologize because I unknowingly exaggerated my
last report. This time I was more patient and let dpkg-deb run longer.
After 6 and a half minutes it finished (compared to 15 seconds when
running with -z3). Could this be a change in default behavior among
version 1.12.x and 1.13.x that kernel-package is unaware of, or maybe a
change in kernel-package from version 8.x to 9.0 that for some reason
removed the -z3 switch?
