Fresh install of nscd fails to start the daemon. Tracing the init script
finds the following...
$ strace -f /etc/init.d/nscd start
...
bind(5, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/var/run/nscd/socket"}, 110) = -1 ENOENT
(No such file or directory)
Creating the directory /var/run/nscd allows "/etc/init.d/nscd start" to
work as expected.
