That was why I was not immediately worried when it happened for pbuilder. But Debian Installer is a relatively clean and controlled environment, so the fact that it happens there too is IMO an indication that some fairly basic package is broken. D-I itself certainly does not do anything strange re terminal configuration in the /target chroot and I'd be surprised if debconf would turn out to be responsible. I have no idea. I'm not all that familiar with terminal stuff. Google tells me that stty does have command line options to change the case of output. Any suggestions how we could debug this? I guess it must be some script or command that is run in some cases but not all.
