I'm afraid that maintaining phpbb2 for the lifetime of a stable release is not
feasible, given that upstream has given up on it and it has a track record of
many issues popping up.
If you have suggestions on how to improve phpbb3, they are welcome at that
package, patches are most welcome.
Before I can use phpbb3 I need to know how to transfer my existing
database from phpbb2.
