Thanks for the bug report and patch. I've incorporated it and it will appear in the next release.
Until then, you might want to disable the cron job that runs
gc_approx, or modify it to something like
gc_approx -k | grep -v .bz2 | xargs rm
so it doesn't purge your Packages.bz2 files
