In reply to Steve Cotton, I created a symbolic link in /usr/share/sear from sear-media-0.6 to sear-media-0.7 That gave me the splash image, or background, as shown on the web page you linked. I tried a couple other things before this, and they didn't have any apparent effect. I tried setting the SEAR_MEDIA environment variable, and editing /usr/games/sear to set MEDIA_CHANNEL to "sear-media-0.6". The sear-media-0.7 value must be compiled in somewhere I guess.
