Launching Alsamixer from the terminal allows me to control volume using the
keyboard up/down. Using the multimedia keys still causes the above problem, and
you can see this reflected in the graphics of alsamixer. Furthermore, using the
mouse to slide the volume level up and down in gnome-volume-control eventually
causes the left/right channels to "unlock". Weird.
xev hasn't been reporting any alternate key presses, and the multimedia keys
work fine in windows and I never had this issue with Ubuntu.
