This sounds like the server part (dxexec) not starting up correctly. Occasionally, this is caused by a stray shared memory segment and/or semaphore left over from a previous instance. Can you please check for suspicious entries with ipcs and try to remove them with ipcrm as appropriate, or alternatively, can you check whether the problem persists after a reboot?
