Hi kernel team. This seems to be a rather odd issue but reproducible on
merulo and merkel. Dispite the bug title, it doesn't seem shell-related;
more something to do with the way file descriptors and forking interact
in these two scenarios.
I've linked this bug on #debian-ia64, but have not got any response. Not
sure who else I could ping.
