Package: genisoimage Version: 9:1.1.8-1+b1 Severity: important ---- Clip here ---- % genisoimage -input-charset help Unknown charset Known charsets are: cp10081 cp10079 cp10029 cp10007 cp10006 cp10000 koi8-u koi8-r cp1251 cp1250 cp874 cp869 cp866 cp865 cp864 cp863 cp862 cp861 cp860 cp857 cp855 cp852 cp850 cp775 cp737 cp437 iso8859-15 iso8859-14 iso8859-9 iso8859-8 iso8859-7 iso8859-6 iso8859-5 iso8859-4 iso8859-3 iso8859-2 iso8859-1
Additional input charsets are available for Joliet through the iconv support. Run "iconv -l" to display them. Iconv charsets cannot be used with HFS, Apple extension, ISO9660 version 2 or Rock Ridge. ---- Clip here ---- My system uses UTF-8 almost everywhere and I'd like to use it in filenames, too, both in hard drive and in optical media. Unfortunately it seems genisoimage do not support UTF-8 very well. Latest versions of mkisofs have good UTF-8-support, but I am very aware of its licensing problems and that's all about that. So, please fix that genisoimage. Meanwhile, what should I do? If I stick with Joliet and stop using Rock Ridge -extensions, is it very big loss? Sometimes I think Rock Ridge is useful only when creating installation media for operating system -distribution. Does xorriso support UTF-8 very well? Any other workarounds I can use? I have also considered using packet writing and UDF. If I do so, can I finalize that disc with this command, after I have filled it with packet writing and un-mounted it?: growisofs -M /dev/hdb=/dev/zero -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (1100, 'testing'), (990, 'stable'), (500, 'testing-proposed-updates'), (500, 'proposed-updates'), (101, 'testing'), (99, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=fi_FI.utf8, LC_CTYPE=fi_FI.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages genisoimage depends on: ii libbz2-1.0 1.0.5-1 high-quality block-sorting file co ii libc6 2.7-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libmagic1 4.26-1 File type determination library us ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime genisoimage recommends no packages.
