At log_daemon_msg "Will now activate swapfile swap": One could have never established a swap area on a partition and in fstab and the messages will look totally the same as if one did, straight thru to the "done" message. (swapon -a -e -v also gives the same null output when no fstab entries mention swap, so can't be relied on to give you an error message here.)
