I have a network with 3 computers -- 1 Debian etch on P4, 1 Ubuntu on P4, one Ubuntu on a AMD64. They share the .mozilla-thunderbird directory. It's necessary to do this so that they share the database that filters spam. I'm not about to train the program three times! Mostly it works well, except for an annoying pop-up on start-up. Every time I change machines, it gives me the option to decline add-ons like "en_GB" or "Xulrunner". (Note that this isn't a locking problem -- I'm only logged onto one machine at a time.) Obviously, what's going on is that somewhere within .mozilla-thunderbird, it caches some state that is processor-dependent (and/or distro-dependent). So, when I change machine, it thinks "Aha! He must have upgraded the software. I should ask..." That information, whatever it is, should be stored in a file whose name is derived from the name of the machine (uname -n, for instance). And, those files need to be managed so you don't get infinite numbers of them. (I.e. delete the least-recently used files to make sure there are never more than 20.) I think that the value of the spam filter database in icedove/thunderbird is high, so it's important that it be cleanly shareable across several machines. The simplest way to do that is to make the entire .mozilla-thunderbird directory shareable. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing-proposed-updates APT policy: (500, 'testing-proposed-updates'), (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages icedove depends on: ii debianutils 2.30 Miscellaneous utilities specific t ii fontconfig 2.6.0-1 generic font configuration library ii libatk1.0-0 1.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.7-13 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.6.4-6 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libfontconfig1 2.6.0-1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.3.7-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgcc1 1:4.3.1-9 GCC support library ii libglib2.0-0 2.16.5-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.11-3 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libhunspell-1.2-0 1.2.6-1 spell checker and morphological an ii libjpeg62 6b-14 The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii libnspr4-0d 4.7.1-4 NetScape Portable Runtime Library ii libnss3-1d 3.12.0-5 Network Security Service libraries ii libpango1.0-0 1.20.5-2 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpng12-0 1.2.27-1 PNG library - runtime ii libstdc++6 4.3.1-9 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.1.5-1 X11 client-side library ii libxft2 2.1.12-3 FreeType-based font drawing librar ii libxinerama1 2:1.0.3-2 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxrender1 1:0.9.4-2 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxt6 1:1.0.5-3 X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii psmisc 22.6-1 Utilities that use the proc filesy ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime icedove recommends no packages.
