I can only partially answer the questions, and I will close the bug report since I don't know how to reproduce it.
I fixed the problem by completely uninstalling virtualbox-ose and by purging .Virtualbox of everything except the virtual disk files. Until I did that, I was getting a freeze in all virtual machines on every resume from suspend or hibernate. I thought it was something to do with networking because another apparently identical Debian system using a wired connection was not freezing. This problem survived reinstalls, even of the 1.6.4 .deb from Sun. The installation of Debian was on a previous Ubuntu system with a separate /home partition, and the problem appeared first on Ubuntu 8.04 when I updgraded to 1.6.2 using the 8.10 repository. So there is probably some kind of bug with migration of settings, but since this involves Ubuntu ... I saw nothing in log files to give any hints. thanks for investigating it.
