I've got exactly the same situation -- isn't it an idea to add a 'lock'
pictogram/icon to the tab in question, when having tabs? Like, next to
the light bulb (jabber), or similar for other protocols?

Otherwise, maybe it's a better idea to just add a letter/icon to each
line that's being said if it's encrypted, so that, especially around
engaging OTR (which can be a bit tricky in the beginning) to see what
exactly is encrypted.
