Huh, sorry, don't worry about this, FF3 doesn't seem to exhibit this problem, so you can close this one...

For the record, I'm using the OSS Radeon drivers...

I have moved all plugins out of the way, checked that about:plugins reports "No plug-ins are installed" and tried again with safe-mode. CPU as reported through the Gnome System Monitor applets is:

* 60% when loading a page in the foreground tab when having multiple tabs in the window * nearly idle when loading pages in background tabs or loading a page with no multiple tabs

Let me know if you need any other measurement or information, I'll gladly provide it.

Which video driver are you using? Is this the only application that
exhibits this behavior.

When loading web pages, if the browser has pages loading in the currently
selected tab, CPU usage goes to 50-60% (split between xorg and iceweasel),
making the system somewhat sluggish. If I switch to a tab with a blank or
already loaded page, CPU usage goes down to 0%- even if there are pages
loading in background tabs.

I have reproduced this using safe-mode
Remove the flash or the java plugin and try again.
