I have serious concernes about this issue. Reason being that Gaim
2.0.0beta5 is still able to connect to ICQ, when Pidgin 2.3 is not! How
does this make any sense?

From my understanding: ICQ has changed their server version number,
consequentally blocking Pidgin's Version String which I believe sends
"PIDGIN" within it. (According to someone in #pidgin in irc.freenode.net)

It sends "PURPLE/2.4.3" as the version identifier. This was not the basis of the block, the block rejects clients using the specific client version number, and KOPETE was also affected.

Furthermore, what I believe has been done is that Pidgin 2.4.3 has been
released simply with an updated version number is the Version String..

How is this logical?

How isn't this logical?

This means that any time in the future that ICQ changes their version
number, all Pidgin clients will have to manually upgrade. When the entire
time Gaim 2.0.0beta5 will _still_ be able to connect to ICQ!

This doesn't mean this at all, it means that every time ICQ decides to block a specific version number, if we are reporting that version number, we will have to change it. This is as it has been since the beginning of time.

If Pidgin sends something along the lines of "PIDGIN" or "PURPLE" in the ICQ
Version string, and Gaim sends no equivilent("GAIM")... then the Pidgin
developers are doing something either fishy/stupid.

There is no basis for this argument as this is an isolated incident. There is no reason to believe that ICQ is searching for and blocking third party clients using version number strings they had themselves used for previous ICQ clients.

Supposing Gaim sends no such equivilent, then wouldn't the logical thing be
to revert to the way Gaim connected? (Lacking the "PIDGIN"/"PURPLE" string,
so that it can't be blocked by ICQ.)

This argument is based on the premise that one user in #pidgin reported that when he changed the PURPLE line to "ICQ Client" it fixed the problem where changing the version number /did not/ which is inconsistent with all other reports we have received, which suggests his experience may have had some other anomaly, or that he inadvertently ran a version of the client that was not updated in the first place.

Don't upgrade to Pidgin 2.4.3; Downgrade to Gaim2.0.0beta5 !

And thus is demonstrated that this is a troll, but I figured it should be made clear so unnecessary changes to Pidgin are not spread around willy-nilly.
