The thing is, a lot of package touch /usr/share/applications with new desktop file, and not all of them need to update the mimeinfo.cache. The update-desktop-database already takes care of not trying .desktop without the mime info, but running the trigger each time some package drops a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications may be a little too much.
