I'll take a look at the patch.  Give me a day or two to think it through a bit.

Another question -- Have you considered using the Docutils config file to 
specify a paper size.  See: 
http://docutils.sourceforge.net/docs/user/config.html  

Perhaps a section such as the following:

    [odt writer]
    papersize a4

Would that help with this?
