The very short explanation is that s2ram did not play nice with the kernel modesetting on a 2.6.26 rc kernel on jon's system using intel graphics. Why, I have no idea. 's2ram --force' should be exactly the same as 'echo mem >/sys/power/state' (which works as advertised). http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16453 has the full details.
