What do you mean 3 axes? No joystick has had that few axes for like a decade...

You could use jstest (from the joystick package) to see exactly how many axes and buttons you have.

I dont know how plib works but if theres an upper limitation of 16 functions (axes + buttons) it could be the problem.

No, they're counted separately. The limits are 16 axes and 32 buttons per joystick.

Did you make sure that you don't have any devices that might show up on /dev/input/js1 or something?

Perhaps you could strace fgjs to see what it's doing.
