Does the font even get saved when you click on "Save Options"?  When I
tried, it did not.

What are the values of `initial-frame-alist' and `default-frame-alist'?

IMO, courier is considerably less ugly than fixed, YMMV.

It is considered best to specify the font in your ~/.Xresources, this
will also avoid the frame resizing that happens when Emacs changes the
font.
