upgrading xserver-xorg-video-ati to the version in experimental (1:6.8.1~git20080528.faea0088-1) made the problem go away (I was using 1:6.8.0-1 before), so I guess this is definitely a driver bug Frank -- "Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place.
