Both Gnome and Pidgin are configured for direct Internet connection.
There is no proxy enabled. Pidgin is configured to:

    - Autodetect IP address
    - Enable automatic router port forwarding (also tried this
      unchecked, with no discernable difference).

To reiterate, I am able to connect. This would appear to be a bug in the
user interface, rather than in actual connectivity.
