It seems that the problem comes from libicu38. See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=484138 I reproduce the bug with a very small program (attached in the bug 484138). When the bug occurs in the utrans_openU function, gdb is totally lost and there is no backtrace available.
