Same things here: Radeon 9600 and radeon 9100 ( two systems..) kernel 2.6.24.4.
If I kill X and put vesa in the module section of xorg.conf (the previous was radeon) the VT is clear (..i mean bright..). If I revert to the previous xorg ( now is 1:6.8.0-1) VT is ok ( the previous was 1:6.6.3-2 ).
