This is not a fix, but a workaround:
sudo G_SLICE=always-malloc firestarter &
The problem appears to be related to GLib, and you can read about this
particular environment variable here:
http://library.gnome.org/devel/glib/stable/glib-running.html
Apparently, the Ubuntu folks have created a patch for this problem, but
it hasn't made its way upstream or into the Debian packages. Please see
