Hello and thanks for looking into this. I'm afraid that I'm not in a position to try the unstable version of samba. I do believe that I already had logging set to level 5 and found these messages in the server log which seem to get to the heart of the problem. As you may have noted from my smb.conf I'm trying to keep the authentication scheme simple and use pam kept in sync with the system shadow database. It my not be relevant, but I seem to have somehow gotten rid of (or never had on this server) an administrative user for the samba domain. This is presumably my issue, but in case it bears on this crash.. /var/log/samba/cores/smbd/ is an empty directory [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] auth/auth_util.c:create_builtin_administrators(785) create_builtin_administrators: Failed to create Administrators [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] auth/auth_util.c:create_builtin_users(751) create_builtin_users: Failed to create Users [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] lib/fault.c:fault_report(41) =============================================================== [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] lib/fault.c:fault_report(42) INTERNAL ERROR: Signal 11 in pid 8852 (3.0.24) Please read the Trouble-Shooting section of the Samba3-HOWTO [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] lib/fault.c:fault_report(44) From: http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba3-HOWTO.pdf [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] lib/fault.c:fault_report(45) =============================================================== [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] lib/util.c:smb_panic(1599) PANIC (pid 8852): internal error [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] lib/util.c:log_stack_trace(1706) BACKTRACE: 20 stack frames: #0 /usr/sbin/smbd(log_stack_trace+0x23) [0x822c3c3] #1 /usr/sbin/smbd(smb_panic+0x46) [0x822c4b6] #2 /usr/sbin/smbd [0x821a68a] #3 [0xb7fb7420] #4 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(vsyslog+0x119) [0xb7cde679] #5 /lib/security/pam_unix.so(_log_err+0x8d) [0xb7815b2d] #6 /lib/security/pam_unix.so(pam_sm_open_session+0x109) [0xb7813519] #7 /lib/libpam.so.0(_pam_dispatch+0x27a) [0xb7d779ea] #8 /lib/libpam.so.0(pam_open_session+0x3c) [0xb7d79c7c] #9 /usr/sbin/smbd [0x82714c4] #10 /usr/sbin/smbd(smb_pam_claim_session+0x75) [0x8271695] #11 /usr/sbin/smbd(session_claim+0x2d5) [0x8093505] #12 /usr/sbin/smbd(register_vuid+0x2c7) [0x8098647] #13 /usr/sbin/smbd [0x80beaea] #14 /usr/sbin/smbd(reply_sesssetup_and_X+0x171d) [0x80c14bd] #15 /usr/sbin/smbd [0x80ea674] #16 /usr/sbin/smbd(smbd_process+0x6f8) [0x80eb838] #17 /usr/sbin/smbd(main+0x10df) [0x82c385f] #18 /lib/tls/i686/cmov/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xc8) [0xb7c2bea8] #19 /usr/sbin/smbd [0x8082b11] [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] lib/util.c:smb_panic(1607) smb_panic(): calling panic action [/usr/share/samba/panic-action 8852] [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] lib/util.c:smb_panic(1615) smb_panic(): action returned status 0 [2008/02/20 16:38:25, 0] lib/fault.c:dump_core(173) dumping core in /var/log/samba/cores/smbd [2008/02/21 12:47:27, 0] auth/auth_util.c:create_builtin_administrators(785) create_builtin_administrators: Failed to create Administrators [2008/02/21 12:47:27, 0] auth/auth_util.c:create_builtin_users(751) create_builtin_users: Failed to create Users [2008/02/21 12:47:27, 0] auth/auth_util.c:create_builtin_administrators(785) create_builtin_administrators: Failed to create Administrators [2008/02/21 12:47:27, 0] auth/auth_util.c:create_builtin_users(751) create_builtin_users: Failed to create Users Alec Gosse GreenBlue 600 East Water Street, Suite C Charlottesville, VA 22902 T 434.817.1424 x315 F 434.817.1425 E W www.greenblue.org -----Original Message----- From: Christian Perrier [mailto: Sent: Saturday, May 03, 2008 1:47 PM To: Alec Gosse; Subject: Re: [Pkg-samba-maint] Bug#478752: Panic or segfault in Samba Quoting Alec Gosse (): > Package: samba > Version: 3.0.24-6etch9 > > Linux phone 2.6.18-6-686 #1 SMP Sun Feb 10 22:11:31 UTC 2008 i686 > GNU/Linux > libc6 version: 2.3.6.ds1-13etch5 > > The following email is sent several times a day, I have not been able > to isolate any specific event in the office to cause this: Can you try to get level 3 logs of the crash ? Even better: would you be in position to try reproducing this with the version of samba in unstable (I understand that may be tricky if we're talking about a production server)? ----- End forwarded message ----- --
