I have the same behavior with two scanners:
fujitsu fi-5110C (backend fujitsu)
epson perfection 1670 photo (backend snapscan)

As a test, on a machine with only the fujitsu connected,
i use /etc/sane.d/saned.conf with only one host line "localhost"
and /etc/sane.d/net.conf with the same line.

saned is started by inetd with this line:
sane-port stream tcp nowait saned.saned /usr/sbin/saned /usr/sbin/saned

with this configuration, I run scanimage and get this output:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ scanimage -L
[sanei_wire] sanei_w_array: DECODE: maximum amount of allocated memory
exceeded (limit: 1048576, new allocation: 3145728, total: 4194304 bytes)
Segmentation fault
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

this happens because the list of devices is not just one or two, but
something like 638027 (a very large number).

A few more information:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ which scanimage
/usr/bin/scanimage
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -l /usr/bin/scanimage
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 37564 19 apr 17:45 /usr/bin/scanimage
