$ gdb --args gxine --sync
(gdb) break gdk_x_error
(gdb) run
...
(gdb) bt

libxine1-dbg is needed.

That said, I suspect an X driver problem; xine-lib Xv works fine with compiz
on my laptop (running the intel driver from experimental).
