By some coincidence and then mishap, network-admin miswrote my /etc/hosts file. In domain name AND in search domains I had the entry "lan" which I did not specify myself; this probably came from my router in a DHCP configuration. However, with that there and my hostname given as 'ulrik-ibook', network-admin consistently wrote my hosts file as: 127.0.0.1 localhost ulrik-ibook.lan 127.0.1.1 ulrik-ibook.lan ulrik-ibook.lan # IPv6 part skipped Note that my hostname does not appear above. This had grave implications: 1. No error when connected to the router or the net: the hostname 'ulrik-ibook' would resolve normally (but I suspect causing slowness in application startup). 2. Without network connection, the hostname would not resolve, causing the gravest error: sudo is unable to run if the hostname does not resolve!
