No, it won't be those ones (empty's fine, I was thinking more of
missing, of which there is one example, namely alsa-common/card-list).

However, forget all that, because I misdiagnosed the problem by
misreading the error message; it's the template that's undefined, not
the description. This would suggest that you have some entries in
config.dat that don't have entries matching their Template: value in
templates.dat.

By the rather crude method of binary-chopping through the repository
with your templates.dat, I find that a fix went in for this in debconf
1.4.34:

debconf (1.4.34) unstable; urgency=low

  * Skip questions with no known type also in debconf-get-selections.

This patch never got backported to the sarge branch. Joey, would it be a
good idea to backport this fix? It looks pretty safe.
