My previous comment is not exact. Vanilla 2.4.29 kernel with minimal setting also displays normal(?) style output like:
major minor #blocks name ...
3 0 74540792 hda ...
3 1 16775608 hda1 ...
I don't know why default 2.4 kernel(2.4.27-2-...) is configured in
that way, so I'm not sure that it is possible but it is easiest
solution to change configuration of the kernel.
