It seems that it's a v 0.90.1 ( March 2, 2007 ) known bug in freshclam :

"The problem is that freshclam wants to notify clamd about the update,

doesn't release the db writelock first (.dbLock). But clamd can't accept
new connections
till it doesn't acquire the lock/timeout."

For the moment, use the etch-volatile (0.92.1~dfsg-1volatile1) or
etch-backport ( 0.91.2-4.0lenny1~bpo40+1 ) if you want a functional
freschclam.
