I've discussed this issue with Morten Welinder, one of Gnumeric's core
developers. The current version of Gnumeric uses the Gtk+ library for
printing and this library lacks a mechanism to indicate that fonts are
missing. This is a limitation of this library (and possibly in turn the
result of a limitation of a library lower in the stack, like Cairo).
