FYI, it seems that installing with aptitude on my system leads to that
situation.
If I manually fo something like LANG=C dpkg -i sympa*.deb or LANG=C
dpkg-reconfigure sympa, it will work much better.
This is because I have no need to use a password for the root/postgres user
which will try and create the postgresql sympa user, but having a different
locale leads to testing db_authtype with wrong resuls, hence not passing the -i
option to install-pg-db :(
Hope this helps.
Looks like there is a mistake in the Debconf templates. I'll check that.
