It should either call ioprio_set() or be started with ionice. Unfortunately non-root can't use ionice -c3 (IDLE class), but you could at least use the smaller priority from the "best effort" class: ionice -c 2 -n 7 <program> Ionice is Linux-specific, you should thus check if it exists before using it.
