'tweak -l /dev/hda' makes a decent hard disk viewer.
Suppose you want to know where the blank sectors begin. I had a CHS
(Cylinder-Head-Sector) disk viewer util back in the MsDOS days that
would let you press 't' and go forward a track, 'T' back a track, etc,
and using this, it was easy to buzz right through a disk.
Perhaps a "CHS disk mode" could modify Page up/down, according to some
displayed toggle. With a display:
10xCyl. Cyl. Head. [Sect.]
...where the brackets mean highlighted text. When "Sect" was
highlighted, the page up/down would be consecutive, (a screenful would
probably be more intuitive than actual sectors which might be less than
a whole screen), and when "Head" was lit, page up/down would be by
heads, etc. '10xCyl' would hop 10 Cylinders. Might even want a 100xCyl,
for bigger drives.
CHS values can be obtained from the user on the command line, or
if root, from 'hdparm'.
