That would be very good, but it has to be done in dpkg first; see
http://bugs.debian.org/24934 and friends.

Definitely it is not OK.  I've put in up on debian-release, and I think the
right solution would be to have a dummy package libungif4g depending on
libgif4.  See the thread starting on
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.release/19319.
