etch-proposed-update be the right thing?
It'd be futile. Only security fixes and other types of really serious
bugs are ever accepted into a stable Debian release. New versions of
anything are never accepted. The last time I tried to even backport a
few important doc patches and stuff into stable (I think it was woody or
something), it never got accepted.
