the network control panel can create configurations that confuse the network manager. Perhaps if network manager could be made to notice existing connections (since it apparently does not require X and therefore should be able able to play nice with other non-X networking)? If it is already *supposed* to do this, then this is a different bug than I thought. If that is the case, is it fixed in lenny? (It doesn't do this in etch on my system, and from google I'm not the only one).
The upcoming 0.7 release will have support for static IP configurations.It will also feature a component called nm-system-settings, which allows to pass configuration to NetworkManager without a logged in user. nm-system-settings will have a plugin to parse /etc/network/interfaces and provide basic support for static IP configurations, wpa and wep settings.
