Hm. This was something weird. Usually I run gajim minimized in another window manager I have. The problem disappeared after I started this window manager, ran gajim maximized, then quitted it while maximized. After it its window appeared also in awesome. Next I tried to reproduce this bug by running the other WM, starting gajim minimized, then quitting it while minimized and then running awesome. But surprisingly I could not reproduce it.
