Hi Ralf! Thanks for your answer. I'm only a novice in TeX and LaTeX, so please forgive if I'm not understanding even basic things.
I was able to get large Computer Modern font glyphs with the help of type1ec.sty, thanks for pointing this out. However, I confirm that including type1ec doesn't help in case of beamerposter example. > I have tried to do something similar in the beamerposter example, but > did not succeed. It looks as if beamerposter does something unusual > with the font setup. Actually, it just loads times.sty package, which changes the default fonts to Times, Helvetica, Courier. According to $ aptitude show texlive-lang-cyrillic this Debian package includes timescyr LaTeX package, which should do the trick of providing proper font metrics for cyrillic variants of Times, Helvetica, Courier. But in reality it does not provide needed metrics for extra large sizes. IMHO it's a bug in timescyr (and thus in texlive-lang-cyrillic), because these extra large sizes, despite being somewhat exotic, are available for latin fonts.
