retitle 451368 srg: Please document default max_age and how it is configured
severity 451368 wishlist
kthxbye

Hi again Matt,

Having reread this bug report, I realise that I filed it in a bit of a
rush, and didn't give you any explanation of *why* I was sending you
that patch. I'm genuinely sorry about that, I was unhelpful. :/

While I am aware that it is possible to configure the package by editing
the cron file (and we have done this in our installation), I don't think
most users expect to need to read or edit the cron scripts; in
particular, I didn't find any documentation saying that this max_age
default existed and needed to be configured there.

When I was setting up the package, all I saw was /etc/srg/srg.conf, with
comments saying that there was no default max_age, and that I should
configure it in that file. I didn't pick up on the command line option
when briefly looking over the cron script.

It is correct that the cron scripts are conffiles; but to make the
package easier to use, it would be nice to do one or both of:

      * be explicit about the default policy of the Debian package, by
        having a default max_age in /etc/srg/srg.conf, or
      * document the default and where it is configured; perhaps in
        README.Debian.

(By the way, does my patch really break the example cron scripts? I
would have thought their -m 31 would override the new default max_age.)

I'm happy that 31 days is probably a sensible default for most
installations. I just want to make it more obvious how to change that
default.

Hope that clarifies my reasoning,
